JmeUNE 21, 2011 Meeting Minutes
Speakers – Dr. Heejin J. Park, President, Flonomix, Inc
Topic – Computational Fluid Dynamics
Location – Benjamin Hooks Central Library
3030 Poplar Ave.
Memphis, TN 38111
Meeting Called to Order – 3:05 PM
Meeting Adjourned – 4:30 PM
Dr. Parks presentation included a discussion of the fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and how it relates specifically to Fire Smoke Management predictions and modeling. CFD techniques are used to solve fluid flow and heat transfer problems using small volumes within a large space to determine the characteristics which are to be determined. The fire model CFAST can be improved upon by using CFD modeling such as “Fire Dynamics Simulator” developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Fire Research Lab. CFD modeling can assist in determining a fire tenability conditions given a fire scenario within a building or building space. Tenability conditions, which are considered survivable during a fire, can be determined. These tenability conditions are generally accepted to be the following:
- Visibility of 10 meters
- Temperature of 650 C (1500 F)
- Toxicity (CO Concentrations) of 1,390 ppm
- Air Flow to the Fire of 200 fpm
Dr. Park then provided several examples in which CFD was used to determine the above tenability conditions within several large buildings.
The presentation was followed by a Q & A period.
Many tanks to Dr. Park for providing a very informative presentation.
