Dale Kent, Manger, Key Accounts, 3M Electronics
Topic – Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems
Location – Benjamin Hooks Central Library

Memphis, TN 38111
Meeting Called to Order – 3:05 PM
Meeting Adjourned – 4:30 PM
Bob provided a timeline of development and issues related to gaseous fire suppression agents starting in the 1950’s to the present time. Halon was a favorite gas in the early years and then started to be phased out due to environmental concerns. Alternative agents have been developed and are now in use. The suppression agent families where discussed and then Bob and Dale introduced the suppression agent Novac 1230 which is produced by 3M and marketed by Ansul as the Sapphire system. Technical and application details were then provided regarding the Sapphire engineered systems and Novac 1230. Novac is a liquid in normal atmospheric conditions and as such is stored as a liquid prior to being placed in a system cylinder. The cylinder is charged to 360 psi with nitrogen and when discharged it is in the form of a vapor. The agent is non conductive and, as a demonstration, an operating lap top computer was placed in a bath of the liquid Novac agent while the lap top was power up. There was no electrical conduction through the liquid and the lap top continued to operate unaffected. The system is used in total flooding applications and is considered a “Clean Agent”.
Further details can be found on the Tyco or Ansul web pages.
